Steak Sandwich

  • Author: Emmy Carter

  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

A hearty steak sandwich made with juicy seasoned steak, golden onions, creamy Havarti cheese, and a garlic-dill buttered baguette.

Ingredients

Scale

Herb Butter

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves

Steak Sandwich

  •  1 tbsp oil
  • 1 lb steak
  • 1 tbsp salt, adjust to taste
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 4 slices Havarti cheese
  • 1 baguette

Instructions

  1. Place the softened butter in a small bowl. Add the diced fresh dill and minced garlic cloves. Mix until the garlic and dill are evenly distributed throughout the butter.
  2. Pat the steak dry and season both sides with salt. Slice the yellow onion into thin, even slices.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add some of the oil. Add the sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender and golden brown. Transfer the onions to a plate.
  4. Add the remaining oil to the skillet if needed and increase the heat to medium-high. Add the seasoned steak and cook until browned on the outside and cooked to your preferred doneness.
  5. Transfer the steak to a cutting board and let it rest before slicing thinly against the grain.
  6. Cut the baguette lengthwise and open it into two long halves. Spread the garlic-dill butter generously over the cut sides of the baguette.
  7. Toast the buttered baguette until the bread is warmed and lightly crisped, watching carefully so the garlic butter does not burn.
  8. Arrange the sliced steak over the toasted baguette and add the cooked onions.
  9. Place the Havarti cheese over the warm steak and onions. If needed, briefly return the open sandwich to the warm skillet or oven until the cheese softens and melts.
  10. Close the baguette, slice into portions, and serve while warm.

Notes

  • Slice the steak against the grain after allowing it to rest for a more tender texture.
  • Cook the onions patiently until they are soft and golden rather than rushing them over very high heat.
  • Spread the garlic-dill butter over the inside cut surfaces of the baguette before toasting for the best flavor and texture.
