Halloween Whoopie Pies

These Halloween Whoopie Pies feature soft, rich chocolate cake filled with creamy vanilla icing and decorated with orange icing, edible black glitter, candy eyes, and black licorice for a fun Halloween treat.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 12 Whoopie Pies 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 15.25-ounce box Devil’s Food cake mix
  • 3/4 cups water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 4-serving box chocolate fudge instant pudding
  • 2 16-ounce tubs vanilla cake icing
  • Orange food coloring gel
  • Edible black glitter
  • Powdered sugar
  • Black licorice
  • Candy eyes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven according to the baking temperature appropriate for the cake batter and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper or a suitable nonstick surface.
  2. Add the Devil’s Food cake mix, water, vegetable oil, eggs, and chocolate fudge instant pudding to a large mixing bowl.
  3. Beat until the ingredients are thoroughly combined and the batter is smooth, scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.
  4. Spoon the chocolate batter onto the prepared baking sheet in individual portions of similar size, leaving space between them for spreading.
  5. Bake until the chocolate cakes are cooked through and set. Watch them toward the end of baking because portion size and oven temperatures can vary.
  6. Allow the baked cakes to cool completely before assembling.
  7. Place the vanilla cake icing in a bowl and gradually mix in orange food coloring gel until the desired Halloween orange shade is reached.
  8. Spread or pipe vanilla and/or orange icing onto the flat side of one cooled chocolate cake.
  9. Place another chocolate cake on top and gently press to form a sandwich without squeezing out the filling.
  10. Decorate with orange icing, edible black glitter, candy eyes, pieces of black licorice, and a light dusting of powdered sugar as desired.

Notes

  • Cool the chocolate cake portions completely before adding the icing to prevent the filling from becoming overly soft.
  • Add orange food coloring gel gradually so you can control the intensity of the color.
  • Avoid overfilling the whoopie pies so the icing does not squeeze out when the cakes are assembled.
