Description

These Easy Homemade Soft Pretzels are soft and chewy inside with a golden, salty exterior, served with a creamy Salsa Verde Cheese Sauce for dipping.

Ingredients

Scale

Soft Pretzels

  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 package active dry yeast or 2 ¼ teaspoons
  • 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup melted butter
  • 10 cups water
  • 2/3 cups baking soda
  • 1 large egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of water
  • Pretzel Salt
  • Non-stick cooking spray

Salsa Verde Cheese Sauce

  •  2 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 tablespoons of flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 –4 oz packet Velveeta cheese sauce
  • 1/3 cup Salsa Verde
  • Salt to Taste

Instructions

  1. Combine the warm water, sugar, kosher salt, and active dry yeast. Allow the yeast mixture to activate.
  2. Add the all-purpose flour and melted butter. Mix until the ingredients form a cohesive dough with a smooth, workable consistency.
  3. Set the dough aside and allow it to rise until it has noticeably increased in size.
  4. Divide the risen dough into portions. Roll each portion into a long rope and shape each rope into a traditional pretzel shape.
  5. Bring the 10 cups of water to a boil in a large pot, then carefully add the baking soda.
  6. Place the shaped pretzels into the baking-soda bath briefly, then carefully remove them and transfer them to a prepared baking sheet.
  7. Combine the egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush the mixture over the pretzels and sprinkle with pretzel salt.
  8. Bake the prepared pretzels until golden and cooked through. Allow them to cool slightly before serving.

Salsa Verde Cheese Sauce

  1.  Melt the butter in a saucepan and whisk in the flour to create the base.
  2. Gradually add the milk while whisking until smooth and thickened.
  3. Add the grated cheddar cheese and Velveeta cheese sauce. Stir until melted and creamy.
  4. Stir in the Salsa Verde and add salt to taste. Serve warm with the pretzels.

Notes

  • Use warm rather than very hot water when activating the yeast.
  • Keep the Salsa Verde Cheese Sauce separate from the pretzels during storage to prevent the pretzels from becoming soggy.
  • Serve the pretzels warm for the best soft and chewy texture.
