Description
Cheesy Hamburger Potato Casserole combines thinly sliced russet potatoes, savory ground beef, creamy mushroom soup, and melted cheddar cheese for a hearty, comforting family dinner.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ lbs ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 5–6 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella, optional, for extra meltiness
- 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup (or cream of chicken)
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp paprika, optional
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter, for greasing the dish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9 × 13-inch baking dish with olive oil or butter.
- Wash and peel the potatoes if desired. Slice them into approximately 1/8-inch-thick rounds, keeping the slices as uniform as possible.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef or ground turkey and cook, breaking it apart as it browns.
- Add the chopped onion and cook for about 5–7 minutes, until the meat is browned and the onion has softened.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30–60 seconds, stirring frequently. Drain excess fat from the skillet if necessary.
- In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth. Stir in the salt, black pepper, and optional paprika.
- Arrange a layer of sliced potatoes across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Spread some of the creamy soup mixture over the potatoes, followed by part of the browned beef mixture and some shredded cheddar cheese.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, creamy sauce, beef mixture, and cheddar. Finish with the remaining cheddar. Add the optional mozzarella over the top if using.
- Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45–55 minutes.
- Remove the foil and check the potatoes with a fork or thin knife. Continue baking uncovered for 15–20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and lightly golden.
- Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Slice the potatoes close to 1/8 inch thick so they cook evenly and become tender.
- Ground turkey can be substituted for ground beef in the same quantity.
- Mozzarella is optional; use it with the cheddar when you want an extra-melty cheese topping.
- Let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes after baking so the creamy layers can settle before serving.
